Standing Against Gender-Based Violence: A Call for Change in Northern Kenya
As the world unites for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we are reminded of the urgent need to protect women and girls in northern Kenya. Gender-Based Violence (GBV) continues to harm countless lives, leaving survivors with physical injuries, emotional scars, and the weight of stigma.
Dr. Mayian, a doctor in a public hospital in Kenya, describes the heartbreaking reality:
“Every day, I witness the silent suffering of survivors—physical injuries, untreated emotional scars, and the crushing weight of stigma and cultural norms. Limited access to healthcare and support systems often leave them without hope.”
To address this crisis, NARET, in collaboration with Plan International Kenya and the Swiss Embassy in Kenya, joined forces with local organizations to take action. Through a powerful awareness roadshow in Isiolo Town, Ngaremara, and Burat, we raised awareness and sparked vital conversations about GBV.
This year’s theme, “Until We Are All Equal,” is a call to action for communities, leaders, and individuals to challenge harmful practices, support survivors, and work toward a future free from violence. Ending GBV requires collective action, from strengthening support systems to ensuring justice for survivors.
Every voice matters. Every action counts. Together, we can break the silence, fight stigma, and build a safer, more equal society for all. The time for change is now.
